Why do we need a database?

We need persistent data for:

• Users
• Authentication
• Profiles
• Password-reset tokens
• Documents
• Chat history, if implemented

Application
      ↓
Database
      ↓
Persistent data

A variable disappears when the server restarts.

A database doesn't.
